At Lozells Primary School, reading is at the heart of the curriculum. Our aim is to teach children to become confident and competent readers by learning how to word read and by developing comprehension skills which they can apply across the curriculum, as well as developing a life-long love of reading for pleasure. Parents are actively encouraged to be involved in their child’s reading journey throughout their time at school.

Approach to Reading


A love of reading is nurtured in children at Lozells from the start, with a high focus in Nursery and Reception on exploring and enjoying a variety of stories and non-fiction texts. Alongside this, in the EYFS, the children begin a programme of synthetic phonics. The children experience a very interactive, multi-sensory approach to the teaching of synthetic phonics following the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme- incorporating a methodical approach of revisit and review, teach, practise and apply. The children work through the phases progressively and at a pace which fully embeds their learning. Effective parental sessions are planned and delivered throughout Nursery and Reception, so parents are fully aware of how children.


Reading Widely

School competitions, buddy reading sessions, themed days, World Book Day celebrations and opportunities to meet and experience story-writing sessions led by authors are also planned throughout the curriculum. The school libraries, managed by child-librarians, contain a wide variety of texts and research into most popular authors is used effectively to ensure these are always well stocked to cater for the children’s current interests.


To ensure that our children are given a broad and balanced English curriculum and develop a love of reading, we have a weekly structured approach to the teaching of reading as well as a personalised and engaging home reading programme called Accelerated Reader.


Every child in years 2-6 has an AR book, specifically matched to their reading age, that they take home to read. Once they have read their book, they are given the opportunity to take a comprehension based quiz and change their book. In Year 1 pupils take a book home to practise their reading as well as free reader to read with parents. In the Early Years pupils take home word lists and a book to reinforce their phonic skills.

Reading sessions at Lozells, comprise of children being taught the various reading skills during the course of the week. They complete DERICs ( a quick reading starter, involving, decoding, explaining, retrieving, inferring and commenting) before moving onto an in-depth study of a text, facilitated by the reading vipers- these enable the pupils  to develop into confident readers.
